Configuring Time Machine

Apple has some advanced settings for Time Machine that are not exposed through the preferences panel. The default is for Time Machine to backup once an hour which can get really annoying during coding sessions. I hadn’t realized it; but Time Machine also starts up when ever you mount a disk image. Sometimes it was backing up a couple times an hour!  You can edit these settings yourself in the plist, or you can use this nice little utility.

Edit yourself:
sudo vi /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto.plist

(change 3600, to any number of seconds, make it 14400 for 4 hour backups)

Or use TimeMachineEditor

Please note, you must restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
